Love Letter

Dear future owners of 1904 11th Ave,

When we first saw 1904 11th Ave, we were dreaming only of home ownership for our, at the time, family of 3 and a dog. We were drawn in by the sounds of prayer at the Buddhist shrine and the smells of incense that drifted from across the street. We saw all the sunlight beaming into the living room and envisioned a yard filled with fruit and flowers, a place to sit, and neighbors to say hello. Over time, it all came to be.

The community started to arrive shortly after we moved in. As Xavi gardened in the front and Nena (our dog) ran around in the background, neighbors stopped by to introduce themselves and their dogs. A little girl, who would become a good friend to ours, climbed our fence while her mom introduced herself. Over time, we came to know that our neighbors put on jazz festivals, create amazing haunted houses, are always available to lend a tool and building advice and to give you the perfect cut.

Our now 11-year-old met the neighborhood children and they would all travel from house to house as a group, us secure in the knowledge that our community was keeping an eye on them. And that fruit-filled garden we envisioned came to be, with a thriving passion fruit vine, lemon, grapefruit and orange trees, a blackberry vine and raspberry bush. We’d often sit in our paver stone patio and watch the hummingbirds and butterflies drink from the fire-red salvia in front of us.

The pandemic drew us even closer to our neighbors. We started to meet weekly in the front yard, sometimes watching a movie, sometimes just sharing a laugh and some smores around a fire pit.

We thought we would be in this home forever so we embarked on improvements to make it our perfect home, such as installing new flooring, siding and building a patio. However, professional opportunities and family pulled us away. It is incredibly difficult to let go of the bright sunlight, the local cafe and pizza place, our beloved neighbors, the passion fruit, lemons and berries but we hope to leave the home in the hands of someone who will cherish it and its surrounding community as much as we did.

Sincerely,

Xaviera, Jose, Salome, Yahima, Nena dog and Mancha dog
